How You Can Help
The Evans Home depends on the generosity of its many friends to provide its children with the resources that enrich their lives and nurture their spirits. The Home does not employ professional fund-raising services and offers contributors the satisfaction of knowing that 87.5 cents of every dollar given is used to meet the needs of previously abused, neglected, and/or homeless children and to care for them as you would if they were in your home.
Donate online using the link to the left or checks can be made payable to the Henry and William Evans Home for Children and mailed to 330 East Leicester Street , Winchester, VA 22601. If you would like your donation used for a particular purpose, please indicate your wish on your check.
The Evans Home is classified as a 501c(3) charity and all private donations are tax-deductible.
Educational Assistance
The Evans Home has a separate fund that provides educational assistance to former residents who are pursuing college or vocational training. We also use this account for emergency assistance to former residents, on an individual basis, who may be in need. This is one of the most unique aspects of our Home, as it allows us to “parent” beyond full time residency.
Make a Planned Gift
There can be no greater gift than to bequeath a secure future to children who have suffered as intensely as the Evans Home children have. An anonymous writer stated in 1853, “may our charity be as boundless as the wants of our fellow creatures.” Bequests offer an enduring contribution to the family of humanity that outlasts an individual’s lifetime. Financial security for the Evans Home will ensure the perpetual care, protection and healing for children who desperately need and deserve it. Your generosity can translate the richness of your life into the chance of a lifetime for a child.
The Evans Home for Children can be a recipient of such giving kindness. Please call us at 540-662-8520 and speak to Marc Jaccard, our Executive Director or sign up online for the Change a Child's Life Club to make a monthly contribution to the Home.
Our Endowment
The Evans Home has a small but growing Endowment Fund which will one day serve to safeguard the future of our special children. We welcome restricted gifts for this account and are always in search of ways of enhancing the fund.
If you are interested in making a contribution to the Endowment Fund, please call us at 540-662-8520.
Memorial and Honorary Gifts
Honor a special person with a contribution to the Evans Home. What greater honor is there than to be remembered as a supporter of children at the Evans Home! We send thank you notes to the family of the honoree and would be glad to work on the details and timing with you if it is a birthday or Christmas present.
Gifts of Securities
A gift of stock you have owned for a number of years can have tax advantages for you. If you have owned the stock for more than a year and it has increased in value, its outright gift to Evans Home would mean a significant tax savings. You are not required to pay capital gains tax on the appreciation, so the actual cost to you, the donor, is often far less than the value to the Home.
Life Income Gifts
If you own securities that currently provide you with a low annual yield, a life income gift may be an appropriate way for you to give. You could transfer these securities to the Home and establish a "charitable remainder unitrust" or a "charitable remainder annuity trust" that could provide you with a greater annual return. This income would be paid to you or a beneficiary for life, after which the assets would be distributed outright. Through such an arrangement, you would be increasing your income and making a meaningful (and tax deductible) gift to the Home at the same time.
Gifts of Real Estate
A residence, vacation home, farm acreage, or vacant lot may have appreciated in value through the years, so that its sale would mean a sizeable capital gains tax. By making a gift of this property, you would avoid the capital gains tax, and at the same time receive a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the property. It is also possible to make a gift of your home, farm, or vacation home so that you and your beneficiaries can continue to use it for your lifetimes.
Gifts of Life Insurance
A gift of life insurance can provide a significant charitable deduction. You could purchase a new policy or donate a policy that you currently own but no longer need. To receive a deduction, designate both as the owner and beneficiary of the insurance policy. Check with your insurance agent for the details.
Wills and Bequests
When making estate plans, please consider placing us in your will. A bequest is a gift that can be made by almost everyone. It involves no immediate loss of capital or income, it allows for a significantly larger gift, and the tax benefits minimize the ultimate cost to one's heirs.
